Indonesian Public Figures who was a Santri

National Santri Day is celebrated in October 22 in every year. On this day, many santri and alumni celebrate it in their social media. They remember the moment while they are was a santri. Being santri is such an honor, because they will live independently away from parents. They live this way from an early age. This will make them struggle to face the world. The life of the santri is the depiction of real life that they will face in their next stage of life.

At the moment of this santri day, we will show you several public figures who was a santri before. Who are they? Let’s check it out!

1. Habiburrahman El Shirazy

Who doesn’t know the phenomenal novel and film “Ayat-Ayat Cinta”? The author of this novel is none other than Habiburrahman El Shirazy. As a santri, he studied at the Al Anwar Islamic Boarding School, Mranggen, Demak. After that, he then continued his higher education in Al Azhar, Cairo. This novelist is very active in producing various works. Many of his works were eventually made onto the big screen. There are Ayat-Ayat Cinta 1 & 2, Ketika Cinta Bertasbih 1 & 2, Dalam Mihrab Cinta, and Cinta Suci Zahrana.

2. Ahmad Fuadi

Ahmad Fuadi is the author of the best-selling book “Negeri 5 Menara”. He was once a santri at Darussalam Gontor Islamic Boarding School. After his graduation, he studied at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, then continued his education at University of London and George Washington University. He published his first novel, Negeri 5 Menara, in 2009. The novel get nominated for the Equator Literary Award. Then he published his second novel, Ranah 3 Warna, in 2011. In 2013, he launched his last trilogy, Rantau 1 Muara, in Washington DC.

3. Nikita Mirzani

Nikita Mirzani, better known as ‘Nyai,’ had time to study in Darussalam Gontor Islamic Boarding School. This news is so unexpected at that time! She becames a santri only for a short time, two years. This fact surprised Indonesian netizens, considering her sexy image. Otherwise, her impression nor appearance made her not seen as a santri, which was far from sexy.

4. Wali Band

A group of young students of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah founded Wali Band in Jakarta. The band went viral in the 2010s with their songs. Wali Band consists of four members, who all of them were a santri. Apoy and Faank are alumni of the La Tansa Islamic Boarding School, Pandeglang. Tomi is an alumni of the Al Fatah Islamic Boarding School, Lampung. Ovie, the last member in group, is an alumni of the Al Hikmah Annajiyah Islamic Boarding School in Bogor. No wonder if their songs have a lot of Islamic elements in them.
